#24 NSU Volleyball Wins Season Opener Over Alderson-Broaddus 3-0

Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (August 29, 2008) - #24 nationally ranked Nova Southeastern University beat Alderson-Broaddus 3-0 in their season opener inside the University Center Arena in play on Friday afternoon. The Sharks are now 1-0 on the season while Alderson-Broaddus falls to 0-2 on the year.

Set one was a back and forth affair, with 14 tie scores and six lead changes. With the score tied 20-20, the Sharks made their first move of the match, running off five consecutive points to win 25-20. Junior outside hitter Jenerra McGruder (Euless, Tx.) paced the Sharks, tallying four kills and six digs in the set.

The Sharks remained in control for the second set, never once trailing. Led by the serving of McGruder, NSU ran out to a 4-0 lead to start the set. Up 22-17, Nova Southeastern snuffed a Battler rally to win 25-23. Senior Melinda Gorman (Sarasota, Fla.) recorded four kill to lead NSU.

Senior opposite Christina Chubb (Oakland Park, Fla.) and Gorman each had four kills as the Sharks won the third set 25-22. Setter Valia Petrova (Sr., Sofia, Bulgaria) put the exclamation point on the match with three consecutive services aces in the final set.

For the match, NSU out-hit Alderson-Broaddus .162 to .147. The Sharks out-scored the Battlers 51 to 37 in total points.

Gorman led all players with 10 kills for NSU. McGruder and Carle followed with seven apiece while Chubb had five for the victors. Petrova finished with 27 assists to go along with three kills, five aces, eight digs and two blocks.

Setter Jamilyn DeCorte led Alderson-Broaddus with eight kills, 22 assists and 12 digs.

The Sharks will face #12 Southwest Minnesota State University at 7 pm on Friday, August 29th inside the University Center Arena.
